My first experience was playing the original game on the Sega Saturn of all things. Then moving to Red Alert on the Playstation. It wasn't until Tiberium Sun (which in my opinion is the best in the series) that I played on the PC. Renegade was something so different, but still stand as one my all time favourite games. Red Alert 2 kind of went downhill for me since I didn't like the cheesy direction they took the story and art design down and while Command and Conquer 3 was a return to form, I started to get nervous with Red Alert 3. They seemed to want to take Command and Conquer in the wrong direction for me. Gone was this dark, grim future and alternate time-line that we'd seen in previous games. Now I was playing through a crappy made for TV childrens science fiction movie. Every attempt to make the games in the series "quicker! simpler! more fun!" has been like a knife in my side. Command and Conquer was never difficult to begin with and doesn't need dumbing down. But there seems to be this group of people that I'm told spend all their time playing online and look for quick matches that are over in 5 minutes. I don't understand or really believe this because everyone I know seems to enjoy what made CnC so great, massive bases and massive armies. Now that's all gone. I'd watched some videos and read some previews here and there and while I'd had some hope that perhaps this was all going to work out to create a new kind of CnC, perhaps something akin to Dawn of War, I was proven wrong with the Beta of Command and Conquer 4. There's nothing here I want. Increasingly chunky, fat, cartoonish looking units. Tiny build limits. Simplified gameplay to the point of disbelief. There's not even any harvesting. I won't say I'm not ever going to buy it, because I can see myself doing that out of curiosity for the story alone (this is meant to be the last part of the story) but I have no craving for it, no excitment like I did for Tiberian Sun. I got really into Generals for a while, and still occasionally play vs my mum, as shes fucking pro at it. Tib Wars went back to old school, but i didn't get the same excitement out of it. And RA3 was just supergay. I played a few games on lan with some buddies, and after 2/3 games we went straight back to yuri. Saw the trailer for this one, not impressed. Applied for the beta, didn't get an email response, and couldn't care less.  | ||
